A Family Investment: From a Small Icelandic Town to Global Success

I grew up in a tiny fishing town in northern Iceland called Dalvik, with only 1,600 people and a beautiful fjord just south of the Arctic Circle. Education was limited to what you’d get at secondary school, so at the age of 15, I packed my bags and moved to Akureyri, a nearby town of 18,000 people, to pursue higher education. To be honest, I wasn’t thrilled about leaving home, but my mom, who was a huge advocate for education, insisted that I leave to build a better future. My older siblings had already taken that step, so I followed suit.

Living in a small dorm with a fellow Dalvik native, I gained independence quickly. We spent weekdays in Akureyri and returned home on weekends. By 18, we had our own apartment, and that's when I truly began to develop a sense of self-reliance. During summers, I went home to work—something that would shape my understanding of hard work and business.

I didn’t just gain an education in textbooks; I also learned valuable life lessons early on. From the age of 12, I worked various jobs—babysitting at first, then moving to a local fisheries factory at 14. On my first day, I was thrown into the packaging department, where all the work was done by hand. Carrying 20-25 kilos of fish around on my very first day was a huge challenge, but it taught me something powerful: respect for hard labor and the people who do it every day. My mom told me, “That’s just how it is,” when I complained about the tough work, and it stuck with me.

By the time I was 16, I was earning money during the summer—around $3,000 per season—from factory work and house painting. My parents covered my dorm and food, while I used my earnings to support myself through the school year.

After completing my studies, I began teaching at the same secondary school I had attended in Dalvik. I taught subjects like English, Icelandic, Danish, German, and Social Sciences. Though I loved teaching, the salary wasn’t very motivating. So, I decided to further my education and pursue a Master's in Public Relations at the University of Stirling in Scotland. It felt like the natural progression, given my knack for communication.

After graduation, I spent 10 years working as a Communications Manager with NASDAQ Iceland. But the entrepreneurial bug bit me again, and I eventually launched my own PR firm, where I’ve been thriving for the past five years.

Life wasn’t all about work though. My husband and I raised our two kids, and at one point, when they were just 7 and 9, they came to us with a big request. They wanted another sibling! It was a surprise, especially since they never agreed on anything before. But after some consideration, we decided to try, and we were lucky enough to have our third child a year and a half later. Now, our youngest is 13, our daughter is 21, and our eldest son is 23.

Looking back, I can confidently say that my biggest investment wasn’t in my career or business. It was in my family. Investing in their well-being has brought me the greatest joy and success—something that has kept me grounded through all the highs and lows.
